Mekelle, Tigray – A pivotal workshop was held on Saturday, October 26, 2024, bringing together key stakeholders from the Tigray Interim Government, Tigray Agricultural Research Institute (TARI), Agricultural Transformation Agency (ATI), bureau of Innovation, Science and Technology, Plan Commission, and Mekelle University.. The event focused on the crucial role of research in transforming Tigray’s agricultural landscape. The theme of the event was entitled ”TARI as the Front-liner of Regional Agricultural Rehabilitation and Transformation: Its Role for Food Security, Environmental Sustainability and Resilience”.
A Shared Vision for the Future
Dr. Gebreamlak Bezabih, General Director of TARI, emphasized the urgent need to rebuild and revitalize Tigray’s agricultural sector, particularly in light of the devastating war that has ravaged the region. He highlighted the institute’s commitment to food security and nutritional sufficiency, underscoring the importance of collaborative efforts with farmers and other stakeholders.
H.E Getachew Reda, President of the Tigray Interim Administration, acknowledged the deliberate destruction of agricultural infrastructure and the significant sacrifices made by researchers. He urged the scientific community to focus on innovation and resilience, rather than dwelling on past losses.
Dr. Teklay Abebe, Deputy Director of TARI, presented the institute’s accomplishments, challenges, and future directions. Participants engaged in a lively discussion, moderated by Getachew Reda and Dr. Gebreamlak Bezabih, addressing critical issues such as land ownership, infrastructure development, and technology generation and transfer.
Lead researchers of the institute emphasized the need for government support in securing land ownership for research centers, streamlining bureaucratic processes, and providing adequate resources. They also highlighted the importance of indigenous knowledge and the potential for Tigray to become a national and beyond leader in agricultural innovation.
Recognizing Excellence
At the end of the workshop, TARI honored two media outlets, Dmitsi Weyane and Tigray Television, for their significant contributions in disseminating agricultural information and promoting technological advancements. Additionally, two research centers, Axum Agricultural Research Center (AxARC) and Alamata Agricultural Research Center (AlARC) were recognized for their outstanding performance in research and development.
By prioritizing research and innovation, TARI and the Tigray Interim Government will work together to build a prosperous and sustainable future for the region.
